Audiobook Creator new release with new design

Audiobook creator has a new design and other improvements under the hood.

The new intuitive flat design makes even easier to use. Now it also features to select and deselect all chapters if you decide to convert the ebook chapter by chapter or page by page for the pdf case.

We also fixed the crashing issue for some large books that have a very big chapter. The reason for that large books put lots of pressure on the limited memory, now audiobook creator handles it better.

Convert ebooks to audiobooks for Kindle and other mp3 players

Last year Amazon killed their text-to-speech feature from its kindle devices. Meanwhile they are heavily advertising for subscription to audible, their audiobook subscription service. Perhaps they saw that as a conflict, or a marketing strategy to drive more users to audible even though Audible is not a text to speech service.

Thanks to audiobook creator, there is no need for amazons text to speech support to listen to your ebooks on your kindle or your mp3 player. You can convert your DRM-free e-book collection to audiobook and transfer the files your device. For that you need to have Audiobook Creator on your Mac.

Audiobook creator generates only m4b files, however it is relatively easy to convert to MP3 (for that you need to use iTunes for conversion) to transfer to your MP3 capable devices.  All apple devices support m4b natively, so you don’t need it these, this is only for devices that do not support apple’s audiobook format.

In order for Audiobook Creator to convert the ebook, you would need an “epub” ebook file. We will add more formats in the future, please make a feature request if you want us to prioritise this work.

If you have an epub file handy it is great, otherwise you can get it from various sources, including  For finding more about epub ebook files, please look at our epub post.

For this tutorial we will have a look at converting an ebook from the Project Gutenberg web site.

  1. Download an epub book from gutenberg, for instance Hamlet by William Shakespeare . Make sure you download the epub file.
  2. Once you downloaded it, assuming the application is started, either drag and drop the file to the bookshelf or Click on the menu File->Open.Audiobook Creator
  3. This is a long book (it’s Shakespeare in the end), once it is loaded, you can click convert to start the conversion.
  4. It will take about 5-10 minutes and you will see the updating progress bar.

  7. You can transfer to your device using the iTunes sync functionality

That is what Audiobook creator does in a nutshell. It loads an ebook file and saves to an audiobook file. You can then drag and drop to iTunes to listen to the audiobook.
